Understanding the difference between market volume and position size. How leverage amplifies mistakes, the mechanics of liquidation, and the core mathematics of trading survival.
Trading Foundations #7 — Fees & Slippage: The Real Cost of Trading
INITIAL_CONDITION
You see profits. You see losses.
But there is something most beginners ignore:
👉 Trading is not free.
CORE_IDEA
Every time you trade, there are hidden costs:
→ Fees
→ Slippage
→ Spreads
and small inefficiencies you don’t always notice
These costs don’t look dangerous…
but over time — they matter more than you think.
FEES
Every exchange takes a fee.
👉 when you open a position
👉 and when you close it
Even if the price doesn’t move, you start with a slight loss because of a small fee. Doing this repeatedly becomes a real factor in your overall results.
MAKER_VS_TAKER
There is one more important detail:
Not all fees are the same.
MAKER
You add liquidity to the market.
By placing a Limit Order that sits in the order book waiting to be filled, you act as a Maker.
TAKER
You remove liquidity from the market.
A Market Order executes immediately by taking available orders, which makes you a Taker.
👉 Makers usually pay lower fees
👉 Takers usually pay higher fees
Professionals:
→ prefer to be Makers
→ control execution
→ reduce costs
Beginners:
→ mostly act as Takers
→ pay higher fees
→ accept worse execution
And over time… this difference matters
SLIPPAGE
Now something more dangerous:
👉 Slippage
You click “Buy at market”, but you don’t get that exact price.
Why?
👉 Because the market moves while your order is being executed
Your order gets filled at the next available price—sometimes worse than expected—because higher volatility leads to bigger slippage, especially in fast markets where the price can jump across multiple levels before your order is fully executed.

REALITY_CHECK
This is where many beginners get confused:
👉 “Why did I buy higher than expected?”
👉 “Why is my position instantly negative?”
Answer:
👉 Fees + Spread + Slippage
The market is not trying to trick you. This is simply how execution works.
A Crucial Difference:
While beginners focus solely on trade signals and ignore execution—often losing money as a result—professionals prioritize execution control, cost minimization, and precise market entry.
Trading is far more than simply deciding where to buy or sell. Your long-term profitability hinges on the fine details: how you enter the market, at what exact price, and with what fees and slippage. In the end, these small operational nuances make all the difference.

NEXT_PHASE
Now we go one level deeper.
Because once you understand execution… the next thing is risk.
And risk is what separates those who survive from those who disappear.
The next module explains:
→ volume
→ risk
→ and why most beginners lose
